Loved all your comments and reflective questions. I went in with VERY low expectations and I left sort of thinking, “that was trying REALLY hard to be something that I don’t understand what…” I didn’t feel empowered or warm and fuzzy (which I was anticipating that feeling, waiting for some cheesiness from the movie), I just felt like…wow that was long. My biggest takeaway is that it made me want to wear more pastels lol What about weird Barbie?! That was an odd storyline as well.
Per your recommendation, I’m going to start Hacks tonight! Thanks for your thoughts on the movie, it helped process my feelings about it!
Thanks for reading, Chris! I hope you enjoy Hacks!! I was angry when I wrote this - I do think Barbie is a fun movie with some redeeming moments, it just missed the mark overall for me.
Thank you for your comment, Caitlin! I, too, left feeling like I didn't fully grasp what the movie was trying to say. And yes, they could have made Weird Barbie send more of a message. I felt like they just scratched the surface with each character.
So excited for you to watch Hacks, let me know what you think!
Your questions give me so many more questions! I love that. Now I want to find other problematic / controversial movies to watch with you so we can tear those apart, too. (By the way, Sex Education on Netflix had at least 3 actors also featured in Barbie and it would be a terrific place to start our Tear Apart Popular Media endeavors.)
Have you ever seen the movie Happy-Go-Lucky from 2008? Just like Barbie, it's a movie that seemed to set out to do one thing but it blindly followed so many pop-culture tropes that I was left with a confusing mix of "I want to like this" and "I really can't like this".
Just put a hold on the library's DVDs of Hacks! :-)
At least 3! That’s so interesting! I’m now remembering that the main characters bff was also a Ken (love his character on Sex Education). I’ll have to look up the third one! Did you keep up with the show? I enjoyed season 1 but then season 2 didn’t hold my interest and I gave up (something I’m famous for doing with tv shows). I have not seen Happy go lucky (although I have read the David Sedaris book by the same name, seems like there’s no relation). I will watch and report back!

I'm going to watch Hacks, too! Thanks, Kendall.
Don't think I'll be watching Barbie, though. Thanks, Kendall
